Title: The Bell Jar
Author: Sylvia Plath
Synopsis: "The Bell Jar" chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under--maybe for the last time.
Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies.
Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made "The Bell Jar" a haunting American classic.
(from Goodreads)
Favorite Lines: "I wanted to crawl in between those black lines of print the way you crawl through a fence."
"The day I went into physics class it was death."
"I waited, as if the sea could make my decision for me."
My Review: I always struggle with what to say about popular and classic novels. The majority of my blog readers are fellow writers and there's a good chance at least half of you have read them. So, can I say anything that you haven't already heard or figured out yourself? Probably not.
I enjoyed The Bell Jar despite the obvious depressing theme. The novel's tone seemed to me to be darkly comic at least at times. I laughed, maybe I shouldn't have. I wanted to quote half the book as my favorite lines. Even cutting down to three was difficult. When Esther explains how she overcame her fear of eating with the wrong utensils, she describes a meal shared with a poet who disregarded the silverware with confident certainty. "The poet made eating salad with your fingers seem to be the only natural and sensible thing to do." After which she decided she'd eat with whichever fork she wanted and as long as she did so intentionally it wouldn't matter if it was wrong by the rules of etiquette.
Esther's mental deterioration came off as refreshing at least in its honesty and lack of melodrama. Knowing the novel is semi-autobiographical, that makes sense. Plath isn't guessing about Esther's plight, since it is her own. Also unsurprising is how The Bell Jar reminded me of Girl, Interrupted. I never read the memoir but I saw the movie, which is based on a woman's time in a psychiatric hospital in the 1960's. There are a lot of parallels. The reaction to electric shock therapy, the final resignation to accept help and try to get well, and both stories show the main character visiting a "cured" former patient.

Fun Friday with Freshman Frappuccino Flashbacks
Happy Friday gang!
I decided to celebrate the best day of the work week with my favorite hot coffee concotion from Starbucks. Though technically, I went to the Barnes & Noble Cafe since it's right next to my office.
My overly elaborate drink order is a triple grande soy caramel macchiato.
For clarification that's three shots of espresso with steamed soy milk and caramel topping.
It's great. It's not too sweet because of the extra shot and it's not as guilt-laden because the soy milk cuts out most of the saturated fat and cholesterol. While I was waiting to order, I glanced at the menu like I always do. Even though, I rarely switch it up. Why mess with perfection? I noted all the frappuccino choices and I flashed back to college, where Starbucks and their bottled fraps were pivotal to many happy mornings.

| My three favorite flavors |
Freshman year I'd pop open a cold, bottled blend of coffee, milk and sugar, sugar, sugar from the mini fridge and jug it in three or four gulps. Usually I'd do this without even getting out of bed, such was the convenience of dorm-room living. My roommate must have thought I was crazy. It was 2003 and she was already talking about eating organic. She was way ahead of the curve on that one. I just wondered, "Isn't all food organic, like by definition?"
Oh and my breakfast to go with the chugged frappuccino was typically a hunk of Hershey's milk chocolate. If it wasn't so cold here this morning I may have actually changed my order.
Of course, there are things I don't wish to repeat from my college years, like all nighters working on proofs of mathematical equations only to walk in to class frazzled but convinced my three pages of math logic were correct and see that "that guy" summed it all up using six words. I mean, seriously, how did he know to do that? No, I definitely don't want a college do-over but those lazy, sweet mornings are worth recreating from time to time.

In which I blame carbon emissions
Can I begin by addressing anyone who still questions the validity of Global Warming? You are all crazy. Last week it snowed here in the Philadelphia/South Jersey region. Yesterday it was so sunny and warm I thought spring had come three weeks early and last night summer came crashing down.
At two o'clock in the morning, I was woken by my five year old chow mix nudging my head off the pillow. Something he has never done before. "What is it, bud?" In response he nudged me again. A scene from Lassie flashed before me and I was little Timmy and Cody was there to warn me of danger. That was ridiculous, so I shook it off. Most likely he really needed to go outside. Any dog owner knows an emergency trip outdoors at 2 am, will not be pleasant. However, when I opened the bedroom door he walked into the bathroom and threw himself onto the tile.
I didn't need the lightning to flash just then to know a thunderstorm was imminent. This is Cody's routine in a thunderstorm but it is February. Why are we having thunderstorms in February?
My new dog a one year old beagle was still sleeping peacefully in her bed. Nice, I thought not realizing I was tempting fate. Half an hour later the beagle is on the bed, flipping out as thunder rips through the sky. To top it all off she peed on the floor in her terror. She spent the night whining in her crate despite the Norah Jones and Jack Johnson being played to soothe her nerves.
All of this made it difficult for me to get back to sleep and when my alarm went off my eyelids physically hurt when opened. All day I have been slow moving and weak. So if anyone still questions the authenticity of Global Warming. I would love to hear their explaination as to why we experienced a summer storm in winter.
